Today's Write With Courage podcast www.thorholt.com guest is Nicholas Pell (Twitter @NicholasPell )
Nick is an American freelance opinion and culture writer with a knack for both enthralling and (the reason I ran across him) annoying his readers.
His work has appeared in the Irish Times, Washington Post, LA Weekly, Reason, VICE, Playboy and others.
On writing he says - So much of how you make it in writing is just getting turned down 50,000 times, and then the 50,001 time is the time that somebody takes it. I mean you've gotta have a thick skin!”
On haters - Years ago I wrote an article saying that I hated Pearl Jam, and I just woke up to like, 300 people saying they wanted to kill me…
On writing and career choice - I wanted to be a published author one day…but that's how the school system cordons you off… they have this pre-set list of things you can choose... I’ve found life is a lot more malleable and fluid than most of us realize… I still use the writing skills I was passionate about to write my scripts…and more important, I love editing!
On video content creation - Content is better when you’re so passionate to create it, it’s not even a choice. It’s brewing inside you…You just have to let it out!
On marketing, and positioning your creative self - Sometimes you're going to offend people…when you say what's on your mind and you don't filter it you're going to polarize people…some people are going love it, and some are gonna hate it…so do not even try to get mainstream appeal.

Today's guest on www.thorholt.com Write With Courage show guest is Martin Pashley. Martin has written for the Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Golf Illustrated and…Playboy.
Along with renowned Photographer James Cheadle, Martin is Co-founder of Union Magazine. What is Union Magazine you ask?
What is Union Magazine you ask? Good question! Union Magazine is an independent print magazine - main focus being subcultures – with in-depth journalism and superb photography from all over the world. The journal is aimed at the inquisitive ones that have a lust for life, knowledge and fringe culture.
They've featured stories on the underground black biker scene in Baltimore, National Socialists in Arizona, white squatter camps of South Africa, and Bikers sticking shopping trolleys up lamp posts…
On National Socialists in Arizona - We just want to hear their stories... after twenty minutes you just end up having beers with them and chewing the fat."
On Anjem Choudary - I just got the feeling he was trolling me!... You could imagine him as a radical Feminist or on the Alt-Right...He's just one of those people who was always going to be a firebrand about something."
On writing - If I can't think of a good opening, I just start in the middle of the story.
Today’s www.thorholt.com Write With Courage guest is Flemming Rose: Author of Tyranny of Silence… Flemming is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington DC, a Journalist, and Author. - What is blasphemy to one man may sound as poetry to another man
- Making a newspaper is always the art of the possible!
- The point here is that context often gets lost in translation… the cartoons did not come out of the blue…it was not something I invented…
- We must Focus on the true original meaning of tolerance, not free speech
- It's a consequence of the digital world…creates possibility of misunderstandings and manipulations…and humor is always very context dependent! Even Charlie Hebdo will not be understood in the UK for instance even though UK and France are quite close countries placed in western Europe
- If this had happened 25 years ago we would not have had a cartoon crisis
- The fact that what is being published online… if it's online its immediately being published everywhere…- So for
- So for me, it's a question about how I see myself and who I want to be…what I believe in…then try to explain in a calm and rational way why I think it's fair to defend the publication of those cartoons and freedom of expression in a broader term.
- I was being accused of being intolerant by publishing those cartoons, and it turns out it is exactly the other way round… that tolerance is imposed not the one who draws a cartoon, but on the one who watches a cartoon! Tolerance means the ability to live with things you hate… Tolerance is something painful and difficult and has to be learned…we need to rediscover the true meaning of tolerance and we have to teach it in schools.
- In fact, by explaining tolerance and defending tolerance you make a very powerful defense of free speech

Today’s www.thorholt.com Write With Courage guest is Peter Thomson... especially for those of you who write, but find making money from your writing to be a challenge… today's guest is The UK’s Most Prolific Information Product Creator… and a super live speaker and storyteller… check out his Achiever's Club http://www.theachieversclub.com

I’ve benefited from and still share things I’ve learned from Peter, years after first meeting him and attending one of his superb seminars...
A couple of my favorite Peter Thomson quotes
-You'll never consistently do who you aren't
-If you don’t ask, people can’t say yes…
And just wait till you hear which writer has had the most impact on him - controversial!
Today's guest on Write With Courage Podcast at www.thorholt.com is Independent Man. He's a skeptic, noise sifter, market watcher and dabbler and aspiring flaneur - that’s ‘a man who saunters around observing society‘ – yes I had to look that up!
Independent Man (@ on Twitter) only been producing scripts and recording political and social commentary for 10 months, yet has over 21,773 subscribers and close to 2 million channel views, despite operating in a niche topic area.
Checking out Independent Man on YouTube you will find he's made some videos on controversial topics, and we will explore why this means he doesn't use his real name (yet!)
Some examples of his Video titles:
‘ My Favourite Marxist’ (Mine too) Brendan O’Neill of SpikedOnline
‘BuzzFeed News is Cancer & Outrage Everywhere’
‘The State of Campus Free Speech’
His thoughts on freedom of speech - It's amazing to me that we live in this era when people are just so blasé about free speech... nearly everything else in western civilization is built on that free speech. On being able to disagree with someone without having to resort to violence.
Today’s Write With Courage www.thorholt.com guest is Gavin Ashenden. Gavin is an author, theologian, newspaper columnist, pilgrim, ex-academic & BBC radio presenter; occasional opera singer, anti-egalitarian, anti-fascist, emigre...and up until very recently, Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen!

Gavin on Twitter @Gavinashenden
On multiculturalism - If you have a melting pot is an exciting mix but no glue... with no glue you come close to anarchy.
On the response of the West to Middle Eastern Christians being persecuted: We don't like reality because it's uncomfortable, and we live in a culture where we've become very good at comforting ourselves... so there's been a kind of lack of moral courage over the last fifty years.
Today's www.ThorHolt.com Write With Courage guest is Claire Fox @fox_claire
Claire is a regular panellist on the BBC's Moral Maze and wrote the book, I Find That Offensive (2016) Claire is director of the Institute of Ideas, founded in 2000 to provide a forum committed to robust public debate in which ideas can be interrogated, argued for and fought over. The institute of Ideas challenges knee-jerk orthodoxies and ensures new generations look behind headlines and avoid over-simplistic conclusions on difficult topics.
To this end, http://www.instituteofideas.com organise a range of high-profile public events http://www.battleofideas.org.uk
On writing - It was the sucker punch...recognising that writing was able to completely devastate you, but, brilliantly, make you understand the World in a completely different way.
On herself - I'm not a natural writer, and partly that's because of vanity!
On writing versus public speaking - Writing is a far more difficult discipline than speaking because you get pinned down...
On identity politics - I really hate that attempt, particularly in literature, to categorise people through their politics, rather than through great writing.
Profound life advice - The greatest regret is to not say what you believe.
Today's guest on www.thorholt.com Write With Courage is Alan Muir. Alan is the Editor of the Scottish Sun Newspaper @ScottishSun on Twitter
On the profession of Journalism - I always thought newspapers could be tools for good.
On starting as a journalist - Get into the local paper, get involved in the local community, get to know the people who are the decision makers, the law-makers, the people that have got their ears to the ground…
On the future of Journalism – While the technology moves on and we’re all wondering where we’re going to be in the next 10-20 years, the basics I think, remain the same. Journalism relies on you being a people person and having the contacts to get the stories in the first place
Todays www.thorholt.com/writer-podcast guest is Joanna Williams @jowilliams293 Joanna is the Author of Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity (2016) and Consuming Higher Education (2012). She’s a Writer, academic, and last but certainly not least, Joanna is education editor @spikedonline
On Europe and Brexit - I just wanted to be able to vote out people who have control over my life. Being left wing doesn't automatically mean you are in favour of super-national institutions.
On Free speech - Terms such as left and right are pretty much meaningless these days. Terms like Free Speech would not remotely have been seen as associated with the political right (in the 1950s)...it has gradually become the left who are more associated with censorship.
Today's www.thorholt.com/writer-podcast/ guest is James Lindsay. James is an Author. His latest book is, ‘Life in Light of Death’ and previous work includes, ‘Everybody Is Wrong About God’, and ‘God Doesn't; We Do: Only Humans Can Solve Human Challenges’
How he started writing - I got pissed off that for my entire life there's all this...stuff about religion that I've never been allowed to say... I started to write it down and the next thing I know I'd written 200,000 words!
James Is a thinker, not a philosopher and used to be a professional mathematician. Catch him @ on Twitter.
